Gwembe District is a tongue-shaped stripe of land in the Southern Province of Zambia. It is in the valley of the Zambezi Escarpment, sharing boundaries with Chikankata, Siavonga, Monze, Pemba, Sinazongwe and Zimbabwe on the Lake Kariba. It is located at 160º 38” South latitude and 270º 46” East Longitude, it covers the total surface area of 3,879 km2 and from Lusaka it is approximately 260 km to Lusaka (via Monze) and 265 km (via the bottom road).
The District Administration is 18 km from Chisekesi off the Livingstone-Lusaka highway whilst the Civic centre is 32 Km from the District Administration. Gwembe is one of the oldest districts in Zambia created in 1947 which up to now has not really developed though with the abundant natural resources.

Gwembe Town Council is one of the Local Authorities established under the Local Government Act Chapter 281 of the Laws of Zambia and mandated to provide services, ensures democratic participation, and control of, decision making by the people at the local level civic oversight, leadership and governance to the community in its geographical jurisdiction. The district in abstract is formed of sixteen (16) wards and is headed by an elected civic leader who is the Council Chairperson.
Gwembe District is mainly divided into three Chiefdoms namely Chief Chipepo, Chief Munyumbwe and Chief Simamba. However, areas around Gwembe sub-Boma are under Chief Ufwenuka of Monze District. The district has about five growth points namely, Gwembe, Munyumbwe, Lukonde, Luumbo, Chipepo and Sinafala.
